Our Building is listed on the National Registry of Historical Places and dates back to a time when young boys made deliveries to small town neighborhood customers, children were playing hopscotch and marbles around the corner, and when locals walked to the "Corner Store" to find wooden barrels of flour, red rind hoop cheese, lard, pickle barrels, tin frog noise makers and gumdrops. Just inside the front door was a standing scale, with a stack of iron weights and a brass slide on the balance arm, just waiting to weigh anything up to 300 pounds.

It opened it doors in 1910 as "GEORGE STREET GROCERY". One of its patrons was a little girl named EUDORA ALICE WELTY, born 1909, whose home was at 741 North Congress St located just behind our building. Her childhood home still exist today. Eudora was a Pulitzer Prize Winning author whom wrote an article " THE CORNER STORE" in 1975 feature in the Esquire Magazine. Over the years it has had many faces from a rumored Brothel up stairs to a place for AA meetings. In 2008 after the building set vacant with no rescue in site except the conversion to law offices, we bought and renovated the building renaming it OLE TAVERN ON GEORGE STREET bringing with it a Southern fare that will sure please your palate. With a passion for great food and a love of history, we invite you to visit Jackson best kept secret!!
